Does My Website Need to Accept Credit Cards?
Perhaps you are wondering what the big deal is about being able to accept credit cards on your website. There are a few questions you can ask yourself about your business in order to determine whether or not you need to have the ability to accept credit cards online. By taking a close look at your business, and the purpose of your website, you will know whether or not you need to accept credit cards.

First, you need to determine the purpose of your website. Some businesses have websites designed for branding and informational purposes, but not to sell items. These websites do not need the ability to accept credit cards. But if your purpose is to sell products or services that are less than $1000, you need to seriously consider incorporating the ability to accept credit cards into your website. Your customers will need a way to pay for their purchases, and they will expect to be able to use their credit card to do so. There are other payment options, such as PayPal or bank draft, but without the ability to accept credit cards, you will lose some customers. Many people do not feel comfortable with other payment options.

Some customers will come to your website just researching their purchase options. If your website is well designed and your advertising is top notch, some of these customers will become impulse buyers. They will be so excited about your product that they will want to purchase it immediately. If they can only pay by check, you will lose the momentum you have built with these customers. By the time they fish out their checkbook, write the check, and mail it to you, they may have a change of mind about your product.

Another group of customers you gain when you can accept credit cards are your international customers. When your international customers pay with their credit card, you will not have to worry about currency exchange rates, or the long period of time that it takes for a check or money order to arrive from overseas. Like the impulse buyer, the ability to accept credit cards gives your international customers the ability to make an immediate payment for their purchase, getting the product to them quickly and efficiently.

It is easy to get set up to accept credit cards. First, you need to have a merchant account in place. You can do this through your bank or some other service provider. Then, this provider will help you set up the software and hardware you need to be able to accept credit cards. You plug in the forms to your website, and you are ready to go! This is all there is to accepting credit cards on your website, and it will expand your business monumentally!
